About and calculation method
Silver Coin Notebook is an independent reference operated by Olsen Industries LLC. We distinguish the calculated metal content from a collectible price. We do not buy, sell, authenticate or grade coins.
Sources and precision
Weight and composition come from linked federal statutes and Mint publications. Manufacturing counts retain the report’s original categories; proof, assay and calendar-year counts are not silently converted into catalog mintages. Calculations use grams divided by 31.1034768, followed by the cached USD price per troy ounce. Displayed dollar estimates round to cents. Actual circulated weights can differ.
Wartime-nickel gram figures are converted from the Mint's published standard weight of 77.16 grains. At 35% silver, the rounded nominal inputs are about 5.00 g total and 1.75 g silver; the guide gives the unit conversion and source.
Prices and freshness
A server-side MetalCharts snapshot is cached for this site. The browser reads a sanitized same-origin price snapshot; it never contacts the price provider. A build-time snapshot remains as fallback. A warning appears when either the quote or fetch time is older than 36 hours, metadata is incomplete, or the provider marks data stale. Failed fetches keep the last good snapshot and its original dates. A browser-local freshness check lets warnings age without an API call.
Source integrity
We do not reproduce PCGS, NGC or Red Book descriptions or price tables. Names of grading services identify those services only. No ads, affiliate links, tracking, accounts or email capture are enabled.
